2017 Summer Reading Celebration Slideshow

Congratulations to this years summer readers!!! They read for a minimum of 25 hours during the summer and got to participate in two awesome celebrations. 1st - 4th grade enjoyed the educational and yet entertaining "Mr. Drew and his Animals Too" on September 14th. Mr. Drew taught about the importance of knowing about animals before we get them as pets and shared sad stories about each of his animals that ended happily when he saved them!
5th-8th graders went to All Play Family Entertainment in Waldoboro on September 15th.  While there, students enjoyed bowling, a video arcade and a snack bar. We hope to have even more summer readers next year!

Battle of the Books Returns to GSB!

We are looking forward to another exciting year with Battle of the Books.  This year we are offering 6th-8th grade students the opportunity to participate and compete against other AOS93 schools, in Battle of the Books at Lincoln Academy.  During Battle of the Books, students are given 4 books each to read and keep.  From these books students are expected to write 10 questions from each book. We meet each month to discuss the books and review the questions that we as a group are submitting to the competition. In March we will go on a field trip to compete against other teams, answering questions that have been submitted by all of the AOS93 schools. Last year GSB had one team that competed and they came in second in overall points and first in costumes.  The competition is followed by lunch and a brief awards ceremony.
We have 18 students competing this year! They picked up their 1st book, "The Big Dark" during the week of Thanksgiving. We met on January 8th to review the book and received the next two books, "Roller Girl" and "Booked".  We will be meeting to review the questions that students have turned in on these two books on February 9th.

Chickadee Nominations

Picture
These are the nominations for this years Chickadee Award. We will be finishing up with the reading of these 10 Chickadee books during the week of February 12th- 16th.  When we return from vacation, students in grades K-4 will vote on which book is their favorite.  I will post results on the bulletin board outside of the library and on this page as soon as voting is completed.

One of our books, "Dear Dragon" by Josh Funk prompted the third grade to begin writing letters to other 3rd graders in Waldoboro. Students are hoping to meet their pen pals at the end of the school year!

Got Legos?

Thank you to Mrs. Coleman for the "squigs", the children enjoy them immensely!  We are continuing to look for tabletop building toys, ie. Legos, K'Nex, magnetic blocks etc. If you have outgrown anything like this and you are looking for a good home for them, please see Mrs. Greenleaf.

StoryWalk(TM)

This years Story Walk(TM) has been taken down.  Look for our next Story Walk (TM) in Fall 2018!
